Using Feng Shui practices in your Surfers Paradise property

By Andrew Bell

Does your real estate in Surfers paradise feel a little cluttered or messy? It's easy for tidiness to take a back seat when you're powering into the new year with the pedal to the floor. If you want to improve the state of your home, why not apply a few principles inspired by Feng Shui practices?

The words Feng Shui is literally translated as 'wind and water' in Mandarin Chinese. As defined by Lucky Path Feng Shui, it is "the practice of arranging your environment so that energy or 'chi' flows gently and smoothly through your home or business environment". The concept is that when it stagnates and becomes trapped, or it rushes too quickly, it results in things like conflict and a deterioration in health and finances.

Conversely, when the 'chi' flows freely through your space in a balanced way, it is supposed to bring positive change to your career, relationships, health, income and more.

Now whether or not you believe in the ancient spiritual aspects of Feng Shui is a whole different matter. However, there are plenty of its design principles that many people take advantage of today. Let's take a look at a few of them and see how they can make your home feel cleaner, neater and more pleasant to be in.

Sofa so good

The couch is a large piece of furniture and can be an awkward obstacle in your Surfers Paradise property – if you let it. Feng Shui principles dictate that you should have your sofa placed against the wall, far from the door but with a clear view of it. There should also be a little gap between the couch and the wall.

The practical benefits of this? Having the sofa positioned this way will prevent it from being obstructive, making your home feel spacious. Simultaneously, people entering your property will immediately see it, and get a sense of welcome and homeliness. The breathing room between the couch and the wall simply prevents marks from being left on it.

Flow rider

Feng Shui principles require that the flow of energy should be smooth and uninterrupted. When thinking about the layout of the room, foot traffic should move from point to point without any hindrance. This means you'll want to keep tables, seating and general conversation areas away from doorways in your Surfers Paradise property. This way, your home will feel unobstructed and easy to walk through.

Who's the fairest of them all?

Mirrors play an integral role in Feng Shui beliefs. It is said that they help to redirect and focus energy, says Feng Shui master and interior designer Catherine Brophy. She recommends having them placed opposite a sofa or around dining areas to give them a sense of calm and security. Furthermore, having a big mirror reflecting the dining table is said to increase prosperity.

From a design point of view, mirrors are often used to reflect natural light, making a space feel brighter, larger and warmer. Having them in key living areas can give it an extra point of visual interest as well as grant it these inviting qualities.

Arranging your Surfers Paradise home

Having your real estate in Surfers Paradise follow some of these practices can make it look attractive and feel more inviting. If you're thinking of selling your home, a touch of Feng Shui could help to emphasise its comfort and qualities, and draw the attention (and wallets) of prospective buyers.
